2012 GOP Candidates

What is the GOP?
  • The elephant - symbol of the Republican Party since 1874 - remembers that GOP stands for "Grand Old Party," but increasingly, the elephant is standing alone. [x]
  • The Republican Party believes that the United States has been blessed with a unique set of individual rights and freedoms available to all. [x]
  • The GOP is one of the two major political parties in the United States. Of the two, the Republicans are the younger party, having their origins in 1854. Originally, the GOP was considered to be a progressive party, in that it was founded with a platform that was decidedly anti-slavery and also pro-American modernization. The party was organized by persons that had become discouraged with the established Whig party, as well as some Northern Democrats and Free-Soilers. [x]
  • The national political party began in the 1850s; Abraham Lincoln was the first Republican president of the United States. In 1917, Jeannette Rankin, a Republican from Montana, became the first woman elected to Congress. [x]
  • [F]or a Republican Party that’s still trying to rebuild credibility after the profound repudiation it received in 2006 and 2008, campaigning on platitudes and ideological cliches is ultimately more dangerous than taking the plunge into substance. [x]

What is a primary?
  • The Democratic and Republican Parties are required to use primary elections to choose their candidates for the general election. Although it is up to the parties to decide who may vote in their primaries, generally only registered voters affiliated with the Democratic or Republican Parties may vote in that party's primary election. [x]
  • In a primary election, voters pick the Republican or Democratic candidates, or nominees, who will advance to the November general election. ...  The winners of these party contests then advance to the November general election, where the Republicans will compete with the Democrats. [x]
  • In states holding them, presidential primary elections are open to all registered voters. Just like in general elections, voting is done through a secret ballot. Voters may choose from among all registered candidates and write ins are counted. There are two types of primaries, closed and open. In a closed primary, voters may vote only in the primary of the political party in which they registered. For example, a voter who registered as a Republican can only vote in the Republican primary. In an open primary, registered voters can vote in the primary of either party, but are allowed to vote in only one primary. Most states hold closed primaries. [x]
  • A primary is a state-level election where party members vote to choose a candidate affiliated with their political party. Party candidates selected in a primary then run against each other in a general election. Thirty-four U.S. states conduct primary elections. [x]
  • It is an election by secret ballot in which voters choose a political party’s candidate for office in an election. Primaries are held for most public offices, including the presidency. In a closed primary, voters must declare which party they support and can vote only in that party’s primary. In an open primary, voters from any political party can participate. For the presidential race, some states have winner-take-all primaries. [x]

MITT ROMNEY

_______________________________________________________________

_______________________________________________________________

2012 GOP Candidate Mitt Romney's Experience

  • The son of former Michigan governor George Romney, Mitt established a career in management consulting after college, working (and eventually become the CEO) of Bain and Company, a well-known management consulting and private equity firm. After an unsuccessful run for Senate in Massachusetts in 1994, Romney helped organize the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City as chairman and CEO of the organizing committee. In November, 2002, Romney was elected Governor of Massachusetts, singing into law a landmark health care legislation bill which provided near-universal health insurance to Massachusetts residents. Romney did not elect to run for another term in 2006, deciding instead to focus on his campaign for the presidential nomination. [x]
  • Bain & Company is one of the world's leading business consulting firms. We work with top executives to help them make better decisions, convert those decisions to actions, and deliver the sustainable success they desire. For forty years, we've been passionate about achieving better results for our clients—results that go beyond financial and are uniquely tailored, pragmatic, holistic, and enduring. [x]
  • Willard Mitt Romney was born on March 12, 1947, in Detroit, Michigan, and is 64 years old. Mitt Romney is a member of the Republican Party and was the Governor of Massachusetts from 2003 through 2007. Romney had the distinction of being the valedictorian for his class at Brigham Young University, where he graduated summa cum laude with a B.A. in English. Although he then attended Stanford University for two semesters, he left to be a Mormon missionary in France for over two years. Romney then attended both Harvard Law and Business Schools to graduate cum laude from law school and as a Baker Scholar in business with a joint J.D. and M.B.A. [x]
  • Governor Romney has been deeply involved in community and civic affairs, serving in his church and numerous charities including City Year, the Boy Scouts, and the Points of Light Foundation. He was also the Massachusetts Republican nominee for U.S. Senate in 1994 against Ted Kennedy. He received his B.A., with Highest Honors, from Brigham Young University in 1971. In 1975, he was awarded an MBA from Harvard Business School, where he was named a Baker Scholar, and a J.D., cum laude, from Harvard Law School. [x]
  • Mitt is not a career politician. He has spent most of his life in the private sector, giving him intimate knowledge of how our economy works. But he has also been an outstanding public servant. In one chapter of his distinguished career, he reversed the decline of a state mired in recession. In another chapter, he salvaged the 2002 Winter Olympic Games from certain disaster. [x]

What Mitt Romney Supports
  • Mitt Romney will rebuild the foundations of the American economy on the principles of free enterprise, hard work, and innovation. His plan seeks to reduce taxes, spending, regulation, and government programs. It seeks to increase trade, energy production, human capital, and labor flexibility. It relinquishes power to the states instead of claiming to have the solution to every problem. [x]
  • Governor Romney is incredibly firm on his stance towards Iran in what will be one of the cornerstones of his administration. Mitt is focused on not allowing Iran to gain nuclear capabilities and he hopes that this can be achieved diplomatically. However, because of his staunch support of Israel, he does not believe that the world can simply sit back and wait for something catastrophic to happen in the region. Mr. Romney supports diplomatic isolation of Iran, as well as economic sanctions, and would consider a military action if absolutely necessary. Mitt's track record is clear in his opposition towards Iran's posturing, and understands the threat that they truly pose to the region and global stability as a whole. He believes that the people of Iran must be involved and understand the dangers of their leaders' nuclear ambitions. The Governor believes that Iran is one of the greatest threats to the security and stability of the United States, and as President, the priority for his foreign policy will be the defense of America and to ensure the protection of freedom around the world from threats like those posed by Iran. [x]
  • Romney cast his history on gay rights thusly: he said he was "firmly in support" of protecting the LGBT community from discrimination, but he was never in favor of same-sex marriage. On the matter of abortion, he said he simply changed his mind on the matter, and that "every decision [he] made as governor was on the side of life." [x]
  • Romney takes a much more liberal view of global warming than most of the other candidates.  He believes that global warming is a major issue for our country today, and he would support some global warming initiatives.  His position on global warming has angered many conservatives that believe global warming is a hoax.  Part of the reason Romney is viewed as a moderate is because of his views on global warming. [x]
  • We need a president who has the right economic values. We too often place the economy and culture in completely separate spheres, content to worry about “social issues” when (and only when) our paychecks are secure. This is exactly the wrong approach. Governor Romney understands that the health of the economy and the health of the family are inextricably intertwined. There can be no long-term prosperity without healthy families, and it is a profound moral problem when we pay for the sins of the present by bankrupting our children [x]

What Mitt Romney Opposes

  • "Of course I support the Blunt amendment. I thought he was talking about some state law that prevented people from getting contraception so I was simply – misunderstood the question and of course I support the Blunt amendment," Romney later told Howie Carr's radio program in Boston, noting that Blunt is his campaign's point man in the Senate. [x]
  • “As president, my plan would have produced a budget that was cut, capped and balanced – not one that opens the door to higher taxes and puts defense cuts on the table,” Mr. Romney said. “President Obama’s leadership failure has pushed the economy to the brink at the 11th hour and 59th minute.” [x]
  • "It is time to cut out the mountains of waste, and inefficiency and duplication in the federal government. I've done that in business, I've done it in the olympics, I've done it in Massachusetts, and frankly I can't wait to get my hands on Washington." [x]
  • "People talk about medicinal marijuana, and, you know, you hear that story: People who are sick need medicinal marijuana. But marijuana is the entry drug for people trying to get kids hooked on drugs. I don't want medicinal marijuana. There are synthetic forms of marijuana that are available for people who need it for prescription. Don't open the doorway to medicinal marijuana." [x]
  • Romney also opposes FIRE Act grants, which provide critical funding to communities for life saving equipment and apparatus. As governor of Massachusetts, Romney repeatedly attempted to cut local aid to communities, jeopardizing public safety and safe staffing. He also attempted to strip away the collective bargaining rights of fire fighters in the state. [x]

Tom Miller

_______________________________________________________________

2012 GOP Candidate Tom Miller's Experience

  • Tom Miller is a 46 year old single dad who has been a career flight attendant for the last 23 years. Through his daily interaction with hundreds of American people from every walk of life, plus regular visits to each of our 50 states (along with many foreign countries), he believes his frugal, middle class lifestyle gives him the connection that has been missing from Washington for years. As a private citizen entering the office of Presidency, Miller will not be bringing an entitled or political ideology with him, instead he will be bringing morals, values and principles directly from Main Street America. [x]
  • Tom Miller is one of the candidates vying for the Presidential election in 2012. He will be running as a candidate for the Republican party and with no prior political experience, Miller boasts a common man’s approach to running the country. He believes career politicians are socializing this country and aims at stepping up from among the people to represent for the people if elected to office. Tom Miller says, “it’s time to return to the day of electing a common man for President of the United States of America.” [x]
  • Tom has not been groomed nor has he worked his way up the politicalladder to be chose for this opportunity. Instead, he is stepping forward from among the people in the private sector to do the job that the career politicians are either unable or unwilling to do. As the son of a decorated WWII Marine, Tom was raised with the original recipe that brought the greatest generation through some of our countries toughest challenges.  [x]

What Tom Miller Supports

  • He will run on a ticket using the reduction of government as the cornerstone of his campaign. Miller is an avid defender of the 10th Amendment and States’ rights over Federal involvement in programs and regulation. Mr. Miller claims that if elected, he will fill 80% of his Cabinet positions with people from the private sector in an effort to re-empower average and middle class citizens. Miller feels our government is on the brink of collapse due to erosion brought on by “career politicians” over the last 7 or 8 decades. [x]
  • Miller would end the federal minimum wage and let employers and employees determine pay scales. That would cause way more problems than it is worth. Employers, especially those that pay minimum wage, would pay significantly less and that would leave millions unable to make ends meet. [x]
  •  Instead, he is stepping forward from among the people in the private sector to do the job that the career politicians are either unable or unwilling to do. As the son of a decorated WWII Marine, Tom was raised with the original recipe that brought the greatest generation through some of our countries toughest challenges. [x]

  • Miller believes that marriage is the union of one man and one woman. [x]
  • Miller sees firsthand with his travels that the U.S. economy has been reduced to a base of service, assembly, debt and consumption. [x]
